TREATMENTS

  What to expect.....

During the initial consultation it is important to establish that acupuncture is appropriate for you as an individual and for the condition you present with. Usually, it is possible to do this with a few quick questions over the telephone or via email. This avoids a wasted journey for you and allows me to be thinking about your treatment plan before you arrive.
At your first appointment I will take time to find out about your general health, your medical history and your current symptoms. I will also use other diagnostic techniques such as observing your tongue and taking your pulse. The information obtained is used to build a picture of your overall health and highlights any imbalances that are contributing to your current symptoms. The treatment will then include some or all of the following:

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the insertion of very fine sterile needles into specific points on the body. This regulates the flow of Qi (energy) around the body through pathways called meridians. The needles are inserted at points selected by me after carefully considering your individual needs. Acupuncture needles are so fine that it is common not to feel them being inserted. Once in place I will adjust the needles and you will experience a mild tingle or dull ache. I will leave you to rest for a while with the needles in, this is usually a relaxing experience. You will notice a change in your symptoms after the first treatment but as the affect is cumulative for a longer lasting change you will need 4-6 treatments.

Acupressure Massage

Acupressure massage can be used as a stand alone treatment or alongside acupuncture. Massage techniques are used to stimulate the flow of energy throughout the body using both the  meridians and  the acupuncture points. Acupressure massage is also used in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal problems.

Cupping

Cupping involves creating a vacuum within a glass or plastic dome (cup). The cup then attaches to the skin using suction. The suction enhances circulation, relieves pain and releases tension in the area. The sensation is similar to a massage and is usually tolerated well. Cupping, although, not painful, bruises the skin. The bruises will natural disappear within 4-7 days.

Moxibustion

Moxibustion is the gentle burning of the herb mugwort in a number of different forms. This creates heat which when transferred to the body, warms and invigorates the flow of Qi. The experience of moxibustion is usually comforting.

If you have any questions regarding any of the treatments and how they may be able to help you. Please do not hesitate to contact me for a no obligation consultation or an informal chat.
